A Winery Born of Vision
Chateau Elan was established in 1981 by Donald and Nancy Panoz, and it holds the distinction of being the first winery in Georgia after Prohibition. Don Panoz, who had previously founded Elan Corporation (the biotechnology company credited with inventing the nicotine patch), was spending time at the company's research center in Gainesville when he and Nancy sampled locally produced muscadine wine made from Georgia's official state grape. The experience sparked something. They became convinced that classic European vinifera grapes could thrive in North Georgia's climate, despite widespread skepticism from locals who believed the region could only support native muscadine varieties.
The Panoz family persisted, and the estate they built is modeled on a 16th-century French chateau in the Loire Valley. Today, the winery spans the broader 3,500-acre resort and is one of the most awarded wineries on the Southeast Coast.
